A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE TO STUDY SERVICES FOR GIFTED STUDENTS AND HOW TO IMPROVE GIFTED EDUCATION BY GATHERING INFORMATION FROM REPRESENTATIVE CONSTITUENCIES IN ALL AREAS OF THE STATE, INCLUDING THE GIFTED ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

 

     WHEREAS, there are over twelve thousand students in New Mexico identified for gifted services; and

     WHEREAS, gifted services vary significantly throughout the state; and

     WHEREAS, there is a disproportionate representation of minorities in gifted education; and

     WHEREAS, teachers of the gifted are not required to have special training; and

     WHEREAS, professional development related to gifted education is sporadic; and

     WHEREAS, a comprehensive evaluation of gifted programs in New Mexico schools has not been conducted;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislative education study committee study services for gifted students and how to improve gifted education by gathering information from representative constituencies in all areas of the state, including the gifted advisory committee; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the director and members of the legislative education study committee.
