A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF TOM MORRIS ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, former New Mexico Congressman Tom Morris was born in Westland county, Texas, on August 20, 1919 but became an honorable New Mexican shortly thereafter; and

     WHEREAS, Tom Morris served as an enlisted man in the United States navy from 1937 to 1944 and was in combat in the Pacific theater during World War II; and

     WHEREAS, he was engaged in ranching and farming in Quay county thereafter and still calls Tucumcari his home; and

     WHEREAS, he attended the university of New Mexico on the G.I. bill and graduated in 1948; and

     WHEREAS, he was a member of the New Mexico house of representatives from 1953 to 1958, where he served as the chairman of the privileges and elections committee and the taxation and revenue committee; and

     WHEREAS, he was elected to the United States house of representatives in 1959 and served in the congress until 1969 where he was a member of the house interior committee, the chairman of the subcommittee on national parks and a member of the joint committee on atomic energy; and

     WHEREAS, he was instrumental in securing passage of funding for the San Juan-Chama diversion project, which helped ensure future water supplies for several New Mexico communities; and

     WHEREAS, he has been active in community affairs, has served as a valued member of several public and private boards and still lends his considerable knowledge and wise counsel to all who ask;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that former congressman Tom Morris be recognized for his long-standing and honorable service to the citizens of the state of New Mexico.
