A JOINT MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE HEROIC ACTS OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS FROM NEW MEXICO BY AUTHORIZING A PERMANENT DISPLAY IN THE STATE CAPITOL.

     WHEREAS, the medal of honor is the highest award for valor that can be bestowed upon a member of this nation's armed forces and is only awarded for those acts that are far above the call of duty; and

     WHEREAS, several recipients of the medal of honor have roots in New Mexico, having been born in the state, entered the service from the state or made New Mexico their home; and

     WHEREAS, it would be a small but fitting recognition to erect a display in the state capitol honoring the medal of honor recipients from New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the policies of the New Mexico legislative council require that before any such display may be erected in the capitol, it be recommended by the capitol recognition subcommittee and approved by a two-thirds' vote of each house of the legislature;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the recommendation of the capitol recognition subcommittee to erect a permanent display honoring New Mexico's medal of honor recipients be approved; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the display be erected in the east lobby of the capitol and that the secretary of veterans' services certify to the director of the legislative council service those recipients of the medal of honor who are determined to be New Mexicans based on place of birth, entry of service or residence; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of veterans' services and the director of the legislative council service.
