SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 5 appropriates $500.0 to PED to contract geography education in New Mexico Public
Schools.
Significant Issues
According to PED, the New Mexico Geographic Alliance (NMGA) received funding from the
Legislature and grants from New Mexico Education 2000. In 2001, the Alliance was unsuccess-
ful in securing state or other grant funds and did not qualify for matching funds from the Na-
tional Geographic Society (NGS). PED indicates that the NGS will match the $500.0 state ap-
propriation and pay all administrative costs to help create a permanent, self-sustaining fund that
will support NMGA activities throughout the state.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Senate Bill appropriates $500.0 from the general fund and is recurring.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
According to LESC, as part of the NGS endowment requirements, state geography alliances
must be based within a state university, such as UNM, in order to provide local accountability.
