Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 272 appropriates $355.0 from the general fund to Department of Public Safety for the
purpose of providing a 10 percent pay increase for Motor Transportation Division employees.

DPS states the proposed legislation will provide a mechanism to attract and retain qualified em-
ployees which will have a direct impact on departmental performance measures as outlined in the
department’s strategic plan.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $355.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any
unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2006 shall revert to the
general fund.

TECHNICAL ISSUES
DPS reports the appropriation provides sufficient funding for a 5.75 percent pay increase, and
not the full 10 percent pay increase as stated in the bill for Motor Transportation Division em-
