SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 434 appropriates $50 thousand from the general fund to the Children Youth and
Families Department (CYFD) for a task force for the out-of-school time program. The bill
would continue the work of the New Mexico Out of School Time Network, a task force estab-
lished in response to a previous legislative memorials to study out-of-school time issues among
New Mexico youth and communities.
Significant Issues
The New Mexico Out-of-School Time Network is one of 25 statewide after-school networks in
the country, focused on expanding and enhancing after-school programming on a statewide level.
Previous legislation (SJM 5 of 2001 and SM 6 of 2003) was enacted to study out-of-school time
in New Mexico. SJM 5 commissioned an assessment of public investment in out-of-school time
programming but did not track Title I funds. Further assessment to include Title I and local gov-
ernment funding would add important data to the study.
