SUMMARY
Synopsis of Amendment
The Senate Judiciary Committee amendment to Senate Bill 888 makes technical changes that do
not impact the original assessment of this bill.
Synopsis of Original Bill
Senate Bill 888 amends the Public Health Act restricting the administration of ultrasonagraphy
or ultrasound to that performed pursuant to an order or referral from a licensed physician, nurse
practioner, certified nurse midwife or physician assistant and mandates fines to include possible
imprisonment.
Significant Issues
Ultrasonagraphy or ultrasound is a diagnostic tool used in a variety of health care settings and
situations. Nurse Practitioners use this diagnostic tool and subsequently treat their patients. A

Nurse Practitioner must write an order for the patient to receive this type of care. Based on the
results of the ultrasound, a diagnosis is made for the patient with subsequent appropriate care be-
ing provided.
Inappropriate use of this diagnostic tool could result in individuals receiving false diagnostic in-
formation. This could result in delayed care for the individual and the potential for a bad health
care outcome.
