SUMMARY
Synopsis of SFC Amendment
The Senate Finance Committee amendment strikes the Senate Public Affairs Committee
amendment. This has the effect of changing the proposed new state motto back to “antique sus-
pice, crastina accipe” (“respect the past, embrace the future.”).
Synopsis of SPAC Amendment
The Senate Public Affairs Committee amendment replaces “antiqua suspice” as the new state
motto with “gracias a Dios por Mississippi” which means “thank God for Mississippi.”
Synopsis of Original Bill
Senate Bill 953 changes the state motto from “crescit eundo” (which means “it grows as it goes”)
to “antiqua suspice, crastina accipe” (which means “respect the past, embrace the future.”) The
change shall be phased in over a period of 5 years to allow for alterations to fixtures and materi-
als that incorporate the state seal, coat of arms or state motto.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Because the bill allows the change to be phased in over 5 years, the bill should have little or no
fiscal impact.
