SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 1016 appropriates $40 thousand from the general fund to the Children Youth and
Families department to contract with a non-profit agency for youth advocacy and family skills
programs in Grant County and the southwest region of the state.
Significant Issues
Grant County and the Southwest region of the state are making an effort to prevent juvenile de-
linquency through family activities. The program, Southwest Advocates for Kids, is a 501(C) 3
organization that gets funding through grants, foundations and contracts. Southwest Advocates
for Kids focuses on the needs of youths while looking for different ways to assist them from
every perspective. The organization provides life skills, access and visitation for children with
parents of domestic violence, difficult divorce issues and custody issues. All the programs, ex-
cept for residential programs, must be court-ordered for service. Southwest Advocacy for Kids
serves the following counties: Catron, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Sierra, Socorro and Torrance.
