Department of Public Safety (DPS)
SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 87 requires the Motor Transportation Division (MTD) of the Department
of Public Safety to implement a program by which motorists who suffer windshield damage can
report the damage to the division through a well-publicized, toll-free telephone number or other
convenient means. In addition, the New Mexico Trucking Association is requested to ask its
members to assist publicizing the means by which motorists can report windshield damage by
posting signs to that effect that can be read from a distance of 100 feet on the rear of vehicles that
carry gravel and similar materials. MTD is to report annually to the legislature the number of
incidents of windshield damage reported, the carriers to which the damage is attributed and rec-
ommendations to reduce the number of incidents of windshield damage.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
DPS will incur the cost of the 800 telephone number and the manpower to take calls reporting
windshield damage.
