SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 95 requests the Motor Transportation Division (MTD) of the Department
of Public Safety to conduct a study on how to enhance public safety by performing more inspec-
tions of commercial motor carrier vehicle brakes. The study is to include the following: 1) the
use and cost of acquiring additional infrared, computerized or other state-of-the-art- inspection
equipment, 2) the cost of retaining trained personnel to operate that equipment, 3) contracting
with the private sector for brake inspections, and 4) performing annual brake inspections at regis-
tration time or some other time as the division deems appropriate. MTD is to report the findings
of the study to the appropriate interim legislative committee before the second session of the
forty-seventh legislature.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
MTD will have to cover the costs incurred from conducting the study.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
MTD will need to reassign or hire additional staff in order to conduct the study.
