SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Resolution 14 proposes to amend Article 10, Section 2 of the New Mexico state
constitution to allow county sheriffs to serve 4 consecutive 4 year terms instead of only 2 con-
secutive terms and to require candidates to have graduated from a state or federal law enforce-
ment academy. The proposed change is subject to approval by the voters.
Significant Issues
Currently, Article 10, Section 2 limits all elected county officers, including sheriffs to serving 2
consecutive 4 year terms. After 2 terms, the person is not eligible to hold another elected county
office for 2 years.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The costs to put the proposed change on the statewide ballot would be minimal.
