SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 658 appropriates $100,000 from the general fund to Cultural Affairs Department
(DCA) in FY06 and subsequent fiscal years for the State Library’s expansion of permanent fund-
ing for the Tribal Libraries Program for cultural preservation and other programming.
Significant Issues
Currently, the tribal libraries program receives about $270,000 each year. Additionally, DCA
funds a consultant and a Crown Point librarian. According to DCA, SB658 would provide $50
thousand to continue the development of the tribal language web site and $50 thousand for direct
grants to tribal communities that would be used for training and general library development
such as computers, books, equipment and programming.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $100,000 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund.
Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY06 would not revert to the
general fund.
