A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO USE UNEXPENDED FUNDS FOR CERTAIN HIGHWAY PROJECTS.

 

     WHEREAS, highways are vital links in the economic development plans for New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the legislature is committed to advancing the state's system of highways and improving transportation for all New Mexico residents; and

     WHEREAS, the state road fund and federal SAFETEA-LU funds are available for improving the transportation system, including highways, in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the following road projects, listed in order of priority, are appropriate for funding from the state road fund and from federal transportation funds:

          A. one hundred million dollars ($100,000,000) for rehabilitation, reconstruction, and the widening to four lanes of United States highway 491 in San Juan and McKinley counties;

          B. six million dollars ($6,000,000) for road improvements to Navajo route 55 in Cibola and Socorro counties;

          C. nine million dollars ($9,000,000) for rehabilitation of Navajo route 36 in San Juan county;

          D. three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) for pavement reconstruction of Navajo route 545 in San Juan county; and

          E. one million seven hundred fifty thousand dollars ($1,750,000) to complete renovation of the Tse Bonito ridge road bridge in McKinley county;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be requested to use unexpended funds from the state road fund and federal transportation funds in fiscal year 2007 in the amounts and for the purposes set forth in this memorial; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent to the secretary of transportation, the governor and the president of the Navajo Nation.
