AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR LITERACY PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN IN RURAL AREAS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--One million five hundred thousand dollars ($1,500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal years 2008 and 2009 to provide integrated in-school, after-school and summer supplementary literacy programs for children from rural areas at a minimum of fifteen school sites. The literacy programs shall have been previously implemented in rural areas in New Mexico, shall be designed to serve children in kindergarten through eighth grade and shall include pretesting and posttesting assessments. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2009 shall revert to the general fund.
