FOR THE LEGISLATIVE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE

 

AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF UNDERGRADUATE RURAL AND UNDERSERVED MEDICAL STUDENTS AT NEW MEXICO'S SMALLER UNIVERSITIES.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--One hundred twenty-five thousand dollars ($125,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of New Mexico highlands university for expenditure in fiscal year 2008 to establish a demonstration and research program that will better prepare undergraduate students from smaller universities for successful entry into medical school or other related health fields. Preparation will include a focused undergraduate curriculum, summer science academies, remote learning, medical school entrance exam preparation and mentoring by rural physicians and physicians associated with the New Mexico Hispanic medical association. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2008 shall revert to the general fund.
