A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING A STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY OF ALLOWING LEGISLATORS
AND LEGISLATIVE STAFF TO EARN MINIMUM CONTINUING LEGAL
EDUCATION CREDITS FOR THEIR WORK DURING THE LEGISLATIVE
SESSION AND FOR INTERIM COMMITTEE ATTENDANCE.
WHEREAS, the work of legislators and legislative staff
involves studying, analyzing, debating and writing the laws of
New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, some legislators and legislative staff are
members of the state bar of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, those legislators and legislative staff that
are also attorneys are required to comply with minimum
continuing legal education requirements; and
WHEREAS, under the rules for continuing legal education,
credits may be given for approved programs, which may include
lectures, panel discussions and question-and-answer periods;
and
WHEREAS, the work of legislators and legislative staff
during the legislative session and during the legislative
interim is similar to the requirements for courses for which
continuing legal education credits are allowed, and the work
often includes lectures, panel discussions and question-and-
answer periods;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico
minimum continuing legal education board conduct a study to
evaluate the feasibility of allowing legislators and
legislative staff to earn minimum continuing legal education
credits for their work during the legislative session and for
interim committee attendance; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the results of the study be
reported to the board of bar commissioners of the state bar of
New Mexico and the New Mexico supreme court; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
transmitted to the New Mexico minimum continuing legal
education board, the board of bar commissioners of the state
bar of New Mexico and the New Mexico supreme court.
