SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 930, Making an Appropriation for the Taos County Family Justice Center,
appropriates $300 thousand from the GENERAL FUND to Eighth Judicial District Attorney for
the purpose of operating the Taos county family justice center.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $300 thousand contained in this bill is a RECURRING expense to the
GENERAL FUND. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FISCAL
YEAR 2008 shall revert to the GENERAL FUND.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The Taos County Family Justice Center is a “one-stop" center for providing social service,
victim advocacy, family issues and other services to victims of crime and their families. The
center has historically been funded primarily by the Town of Taos and Taos County, while the
district attorney takes the lead on providing centralized services for families in Taos County.

The Eighth District Attorney’s Office reports that while it helped get the family justice center off
the ground, the intent is for the family justice center to function on its own. The Eighth District
Attorney’s office plans for the center to transition out of its office by the end of the fiscal year.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
What steps is the family justice center taking to function independently of the Eighth District
Attorney’s office.
What other funding sources (federal, local) are available to support the Taos County Family
Justice Center.
