SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 1262 appropriates $40 thousand from the general fund to the board of regents at the
University of New Mexico for the Center for Latin American resources and outreach.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $40 thousand contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general
fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2008 shall
revert to the general fund.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
HED notes the UNM program draws on “cross-campus excellence in research, scholarship and
teaching in Latin America and is dedicated to advancing knowledge in and service to the field."
The Latin American studies program is an interdisciplinary program that grants the bachelors,

masters and doctorate degrees as well there are dual degree options with five professional
schools (Business Administration, Community and Regional Planning, Education, Law and
Nursing).
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
HED notes funding would be used as follows:
•
Increase networks and economic development efforts with Mexico and Latin American
countries
•
Establish a Fullbright scholar-type program for students from Mexico and Latin America
•
Support international college preparatory programs in which high school age children
learn about UNM and international admissions process
•
Support visiting professor and student exchange programs
•
Recruit students for the Latin American and Iberian Institute
