SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Teen Courts work with youth in areas such as DWI prevention, substance abuse prevention and
counseling. The program offers alternatives such as community service for youth that have
committed misdemeanor crimes. Family involvement is encouraged.
This budget request is not contained in the judiciary’s unified budget.
PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS
Although there are approximately 20 teen courts in New Mexico, there are currently no standard
operating guidelines for running a teen court and no performance measures available by which to
measure their performance.

WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ENACTING THIS BILL
If SB 637 is not passed, programs that provide counseling and substance abuse prevention could
be at risk.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
How will the Grant County Teen Court function in comparison to other teen courts around the
state.
