Youth Commission in efforts to implement youth commissions statewide.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
DFA reports that the Las Vegas Youth Commission (Commission) was established through the
federal program "Communities that Care" in 1998. The Commission is made up of junior and
high school students who are appointed by the Las Vegas City Council. The goal of the
Commission is to train today's youth to be tomorrow's leader. The Commission is also a
functioning Board of the City Council and meets when needed by the full Council.

In 2005, the Communities that Care Program lost its funding. With that loss, the Commission
also lost its full time coordinator, and for the past year the students have been responsible for all
aspects of the Commission. In 2006, the Commission did not receive Legislative funding but was
able to continue with the little remaining funds they had from the Communities that Care
Program. The Commission's planned State conference on youth and government was unable to
happen due to lack of funding.
SB 747 would provide $100.0 to the Commission to be used to plan and implement a statewide
Youth and Government conference for the summer of 2007. The Commission hopes to draw
from students all around the state to Las Vegas, NM to discuss how to involve the youth of New
Mexico into local and state issues. A portion of the funding will be used to evaluate the progress
of the Commission and to attempt to implement new programs in several communities around
the state and monitor the effectiveness of these new programs.
