SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 1177 clarifies the definition of “family member" for the purposes of the disclosure
requirement and prohibition of campaign contributions by prospective contractors.
The bill defines a "family member" to mean a spouse, father, mother, child, father-in-law,
mother-in-law, daughter-in-law or son-in-law of a prospective contractor, if the prospective
contractor is a natural person; or an owner of a prospective contractor, if the prospective
contractor is not a natural person and 100% of the ownership interest in the prospective
contractor is held by less than fifteen natural persons;
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
There is no fiscal impact.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The provisions in this bill will give guidance to state agencies and potential contracts of what
exactly a family member means—especially if the contractor is not a natural person such as a
company or corporation.
