SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Memorial 23 requests the declaration of the month of April as “Open Your Heart to
Newborns in Need" Month.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Each year over 5,000 babies are born at one Albuquerque hospital;
Many families welcoming new babies into the world have few resources and little discretionary
income to provide necessities for their babies;
Car seats, strollers, baby monitors and diapers, essential for healthy environments in which a
baby can survive, can be collected during an awareness campaign;
Over 40,000 items for newborns were collected for the New Mexico Newborns in Need program
last year; and
The newborns of New Mexico could greatly benefit from a continuation of the program, which
pairs parents of newborns with the items and services they need.
