Senate Memorial 33 requests the commendation of Sanger Elementary School Principal Nancy
Havink on being named New Mexico’s 2006 Principal of the Year.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Senate Memorial 33 states:
Nancy Havink has served her district as a testing coordinator, a mentor for new principals
and a developer of workshops on writing instruction and classroom computer use;
Nancy Havink is known for the many ways she bonds with her students;
Nancy Havink is an active principal whose commitment is clearly evident through
programs she has designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students, and
through her firmly established community ties with parents and local business
organizations;
Nancy Havink's accomplishments include morning math and English "challenges" to
encourage students' thinking, a hands-on science lab, a thirty-minute writing program and
a parent-staffed resource room for learning enrichment;
The student-painted national and state symbols on the walls of Sanger Elementary are a
testament to Nancy Havink's belief in hands-on learning;

The National Distinguished Principals Program was established in 1984 as an annual
event to honor exemplary elementary and middle school principals who set the pace,
character and quality of the education children receive during their early school years;
The National Distinguished Principals Program honors one principal from each state who
shows a strong commitment to the principalship through active membership in
professional associations; is respected by students, colleagues, parents and the
community at large; assumes an active role in the community; is a leader in civic,
religious or humanitarian activities; shows strong educational leadership by setting high
expectations for school staff and students; and maintains an orderly purposeful learning
environment; and
Nancy Havink was selected under the National Distinguished Principals Program as New
Mexico's principal of the year for 2006.
This memorial additionally requests that copies of this memorial be transmitted to Nancy
Havink and Sanger elementary school.
