Synopsis of Bill

Senate Memorial 71 requests the declaration of March 15, 2007 as “Cowboy Day" at the Senate

and the recognition of July 28, 2007 as “New Mexico Day of the Cowboy."

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

Senate Memorial 71 states:

•

Cowboys are a fundamental part of New Mexico's reputation as a leading ranching state,

and represent a diversity that is uniquely American;

•

In New Mexico’s early years, cowboys worked throughout the state, as explorers and

guardians of a growing American frontier. Their legacy lives on today as men and

women literally walk in the cowboys' footsteps, working and living upon the land;

•

New Mexicans have long been recognized as leaders in the cowboy and ranching world,

with numerous halls of fame across the country honoring the cowboy tradition; and

•

The "National Day of the Cowboy" has been celebrated for the past two years and, again,

this year, Americans in communities both far and near will join to celebrate the cowboys'

day.

•

This memorial requests that all New Mexicans recognize cowboys, both past and present,

for their numerous contributions to the state.
