SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Memorial 80 requests that the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, the Verde Group, the
City of Sunland Park, the owners of Camino Real Landfill and the Gadsden School District work
cooperatively to study the impact of the Camino Real Landfill.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
There will be a fiscal impact to conduct the study that SM 80 requires, and ultimately there will
be an additional impact to relocate the landfill.
It seems that the participating entities will share the costs to conduct the study, and also the costs
associated with the relocation of the landfill.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Senate Memorial 80 states that a four-hundred-eighty-acre landfill, the Camino Real Landfill, is
located in close proximity to the city of Sunland Park, one thousand feet from an elementary
school and near residential neighborhoods. Sunland Park is starting to make economic gains and
only one percent of the solid waste in the landfill comes from Sunland Park.
