48th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - first session, 2007

INTRODUCED BY

Michael S. Sanchez

A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING BRIAN URLACHER FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL.

     WHEREAS, Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, a native of Lovington, New Mexico, will make his first super bowl appearance on February 4, 2007 when he leads the outstanding defense of the "monsters of the midway" in super bowl XLI; and

     WHEREAS, Urlacher, who was a versatile player on both defense and offense for the university of New Mexico, is following in the footsteps of great Chicago Bears players like Rick Casares, Mike Ditka, Dick Butkus and Gayle Sayers by becoming only the fifth player in the team's history to be named to the pro bowl in each of his first four national football league seasons; and

     WHEREAS, while Urlacher would no doubt rather be playing quarterback, he excels at "quarterbacking" the Chicago defense, aligning his teammates and quickly calling defensive audibles to counter offensive shifts; and

     WHEREAS, Urlacher is to be commended for remembering his New Mexico roots by donating generously to Lovington high school and the university of New Mexico, arranging for the Nike company to outfit Lovington's varsity teams with shoes, supporting the special olympics in New Mexico and supporting the university's lobo club; and

     WHEREAS, Urlacher exemplifies New Mexico's spirit and makes all New Mexicans, even those misguided Indianapolis Colts fans, proud everyday;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that best wishes be extended to Brian Urlacher and his Chicago Bears teammates in super bowl XLI; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial and a generous helping of New Mexico green chile be delivered to Brian Urlacher.
