A JOINT MEMORIAL
HONORING THE LIFE AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF REPRESENTATIVE MANUEL G.
HERRERA.
WHEREAS, Representative Manuel G. "Manny" Herrera died
on October 21, 2007 at the age of seventy after a long,
courageous battle with cancer; and
WHEREAS, Representative Herrera, a loving husband and
father, is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Kathleen
Herrera, and his children, Maurice Herrera, Nick Contor,
Christine Fitzgerald and Julie Smith, and he was preceded in
death by his oldest daughter, Veronica Soriano; and
WHEREAS, Representative Herrera served his community for
decades as a police officer, city councilor, mayor and judge
before beginning his service to New Mexicans statewide as a
state representative in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Representative Herrera was a tireless public
servant and an advocate for working men and women, diligently
representing the interests of Grant and Hidalgo counties with
a steady, gentlemanly manner; and
WHEREAS, in spite of his illness, he faithfully executed
the duties of his office, attending committee meetings and
legislative sessions, traveling thousands of miles throughout
the state with the help of his wife, Kathleen; and
WHEREAS, he shared his joy and enthusiasm and never

complained about the burden that only he could bear, remaining
a true caballero to the very end;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the achievements and dedication of
Representative Manuel G. "Manny" Herrera be recognized and
celebrated; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that his friends, family and
colleagues will miss his humor, his charm and his devotion;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this joint
memorial be transmitted to his wife, Kathleen Herrera, and
other family members.
