A MEMORIAL
DECLARING JANUARY 24, 2008 "SCHOOLS ON THE RISE DAY" AT THE
SENATE.
WHEREAS, New Mexico's education standards, assessments
and school accountability are now among the best in the
country as judged by Education Week's quality counts survey;
and
WHEREAS, the quality counts 2008 report indicates that
New Mexico's school reform policies are turning our
educational system around, as evidenced by steady progress
over the last four years; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico has become a national model in the
areas of early childhood education and college and career
readiness and for having highly qualified teachers in all
classrooms; and
WHEREAS, closing the achievement gap in New Mexico's
schools is a goal of all dedicated educators, policymakers
and residents of the state; and
WHEREAS, three hundred sixty-eight of New Mexico's eight
hundred eight public schools met or exceeded adequate yearly
progress this year; and
WHEREAS, through the hard work and dedication of faculty
and administrators and their commitment to the future of all
New Mexico's children, ten schools have been designated as

"schools on the rise" for achieving adequate yearly progress
for two consecutive years after undergoing restructuring; and
WHEREAS, those schools are Alamosa elementary and
Maryann Binford elementary in the Albuquerque public school
district; La Promesa elementary in the Belen consolidated
school district; Alcalde elementary in the Espanola public
school district; Apache elementary in the Farmington municipal
school district; Desert View elementary in the Gadsden
independent school district; Booker T. Washington elementary
in the Hobbs municipal school district; Sunset elementary and
University high school in the Roswell independent school
district; and Arrey elementary in the Truth or Consequences
municipal school district;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE
STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 24, 2008 be declared
"Schools on the Rise Day" at the senate to honor and recognize
those ten schools; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
transmitted to each of the ten "schools on the rise".
