A MEMORIAL
DECLARING JANUARY 30, 2008 "LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO, DAY" AT
THE SENATE.
WHEREAS, Las Vegas, New Mexico, was established in 1835
on the Santa Fe trail after a group of settlers received a
land grant from the Mexican government; and
WHEREAS, the railroad arrived in 1880, setting up a
maintenance and provisioning depot east of the old town, and
a "new town" was established; and
WHEREAS, Las Vegas was one of the largest cities in the
southwest and it had its own opera house, a college, a Harvey
House hotel and a Carnegie library; and
WHEREAS, Las Vegas was host to a reunion of Teddy
Roosevelt's rough riders, held the earliest recorded rodeo
and was a venue for many colorful western characters and
events; and
WHEREAS, Las Vegas is a city rich in history and
tradition;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE
STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 30, 2008 be declared "Las
Vegas, New Mexico, Day" at the senate.
