A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO CREATE A PLANNING COMMITTEE TO
PROMOTE THE USE OF INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN
NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, "intelligent transportation systems" is the
term used by the federal department of transportation and the
transportation industry to describe the development and
deployment of advanced technology to improve the safety and
performance of surface transportation systems; and
WHEREAS, federal transportation legislation in recent
years required development of a national intelligent
transportation systems program plan, and the federal
department of transportation provides research funding and
other support to encourage the development of intelligent
transportation systems nationwide; and
WHEREAS, intelligent transportation systems increase the
efficiency and safety of transportation infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, the successful deployment of intelligent
transportation systems in New Mexico will benefit economic
development, public safety, technology transfer and
information exchange; and
WHEREAS, successful deployment of intelligent
transportation systems depends on the cooperation and
involvement of stakeholders in the public sector at the

federal, state and local levels, on the private sector and on
the research and development communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE
STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to create a
governor's planning committee on intelligent transportation
systems to evaluate the progress of intelligent transportation
systems development in New Mexico and make recommendations on
strategies to support the continued development and
maintenance of intelligent transportation systems in
New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the governor be requested to
include as members of the planning committee on intelligent
transportation systems state officials and members of the
public who have expertise in the fields of transportation,
information technologies, public safety and economic
development; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
transmitted to the secretary of transportation, the secretary
of information technology, the secretary of economic
development and the governor.
