Senate Memorial 74 requests the declaration of Wednesday, January 30, 2008 as “San Miguel
County Day" at the New Mexico Legislature.
Senate Memorial 74 provides the following statements:
•
San Miguel county was established as one of the original counties in New Mexico in
1852; and
•
In the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century, San
Miguel county was the mercantile hub of New Mexico, attracting trade and commerce
from throughout the southwest and providing a vibrant economy for northeastern New
Mexico; and
•
San Miguel county has always been the parent political subdivision of a thriving
educational and economic base in the area, including the city of Las Vegas, the village of
Pecos, New Mexico highlands university, three public school systems and the Las Vegas
medical center; and
•
In recent years, the San Miguel county government has made significant strides in
providing services to the citizens of the county and in improving the capital assets of the
county, including the construction of a detention center, a public health office and a
judicial complex; and
•
For many decades, San Miguel county has been known as "El Condado Imperial", due to
the active participation of its citizens in political and governmental affairs;
WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ENACTING THIS BILL
Wednesday, January 30, 2008, will not be set aside as “San Miguel County Day" at the New
Mexico Legislature.
