A JOINT MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS OF THE ALBUQUERQUE-BERNALILLO COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP BY DECLARING FEBRUARY 12, 2009 "COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DAY" AT THE LEGISLATURE AND REINFORCING THE STATE'S COMMITMENT TO STUDY THE NEED FOR AND POSSIBLE APPROACHES TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS WITHIN THE STATE'S PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.

 

     WHEREAS, the Albuquerque public schools, the city of Albuquerque, Bernalillo county and the Albuquerque business education compact have entered into a joint agreement and made a financial contribution to form the Albuquerque-Bernalillo county community school partnership, known as the "ABC partnership"; and

     WHEREAS, central New Mexico community college also has made a commitment to become a partner; and

     WHEREAS, the ABC partnership is actively pursuing a similar commitment from the university of New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the elected and appointed officials of the ABC partnership understand the importance of working collaboratively and cooperatively to assure the success of the community school partnership for the good of New Mexico's children; and

     WHEREAS, collaboration and cooperation among those participating entities will create a community school partnership that is unique within the United States; and

     WHEREAS, the ABC partnership has been recognized for its accomplishments by the coalition for community schools in Washington, D.C., through a grant opportunity for the partnership; and

     WHEREAS, five schools within Albuquerque and Bernalillo county have initiated structures to implement community schools within their school communities with grants provided by the ABC partnership; and 

     WHEREAS, during the 2007 legislative session, House Joint Memorial 30, which requested that the public education department, in conjunction with the children's cabinet, study the creation and operation of community schools in public schools, was passed into law;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the efforts and accomplishments of the ABC partnership be recognized by declaring February 12, 2009 "Community Schools Day" at the legislature; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the public education department, in conjunction with the children's cabinet, be requested to continue to study the creation and operation of community schools in public school systems throughout the state; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of education, the Albuquerque public schools superintendent and the chair of the Bernalillo county commission.
