A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 3, 2009 AS "NORTHERN NEW MEXICO 'REDI FOR ACTION' DAY" IN THE NEW MEXICO HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

     WHEREAS, in 2008, Los Alamos county initiated and funded an important project known as the "regional economic development initiative", which has become known as "REDI"; and

     WHEREAS, REDI is a collaborative effort among northern New Mexico neighbors, including the town of Taos, Taos county, Rio Arriba county, the city of Espanola, the city of Santa Fe and Santa Fe county; and

     WHEREAS, the charter of this unique team of regional partners has been to develop an economic development plan that will capitalize on the strengths, resources and talents of northern New Mexicans to benefit all people in the region by creating new jobs, new revenue sources and new opportunities for growth; and

     WHEREAS, the team's creation of the REDI plan was facilitated by two New Mexico firms, the regional development corporation and the north central New Mexico economic development district, with dozens of stakeholder meetings over a period of several months; and

     WHEREAS, this effort resulted in a clear focus on and selection of regional priorities for implementation over five-, ten- and twenty-five-year periods; and

     WHEREAS, four target industry clusters have been identified that will set the pace for the REDI plan to become a reality; and

     WHEREAS, these four clusters, which include renewable energy and green energy, technology, value-added agriculture and entertainment, align closely with similar goals that the state of New Mexico promotes for healthy economic development; and

     WHEREAS, beyond the development of a regional economic strategy and plan, the true benefit of the regional team meetings was the atmosphere of cooperation and communication that developed among these important northern New Mexico communities as they worked side by side to develop a shared vision and the resulting joint plan for their future;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 3, 2009 be declared "Northern New Mexico 'REDI for Action' Day" at the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the New Mexico house of representatives applaud the efforts of the regional partners and urge all New Mexicans to congratulate the regional development corporation, the north central New Mexico economic development district and REDI on the successful completion of their plan, to join them in celebrating their newfound working relationships and to encourage the partners to take the next steps to implement and fund the projects and initiatives of the REDI plan.
