A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING AND HONORING BERNALILLO COUNTY BY DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 11, 2009 "BERNALILLO COUNTY DAY" AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, Bernalillo county is located in central New Mexico and stretches from the east mountain area of the Sandia mountains to the volcanic cliffs of the west mesa, and it encompasses nearly twelve hundred square miles and is home to over five hundred fifty-six thousand six hundred seventy-eight residents; and

     WHEREAS, Bernalillo county has a rich history and culture and was formally established in 1851 when the territorial legislature moved from the town of Bernalillo to Ranchos de Albuquerque and required the district court to be held there; and

     WHEREAS, the five-member Bernalillo county commission passes ordinances and resolutions, approves budgets, establishes zoning and business regulations and appoints the county manager, who oversees the operations of twenty-five departments with a total of two thousand five hundred employees; and

     WHEREAS, Bernalillo county is home to more than twenty cities, towns and places of interest, ranging from Albuquerque, the largest city in the state, to Chililli, which is located in the Manzano mountains and is one of the oldest settlements in the state, dating back to 1581; and

     WHEREAS, Bernalillo county hosts many businesses, attractions and events, including Sandia national laboratories, Kirtland air force base, the Albuquerque international balloon fiesta, the Rio Grande nature center, Petroglyph national monument and the New Mexico state fair; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to the university of New Mexico, other significant institutions of higher learning are located in Bernalillo county, including central New Mexico community college, the southwestern Indian polytechnic institute, national American university, the university of Saint Francis college of nursing and others; and

     WHEREAS, the Bernalillo county commission is committed to excellence and provides a wide array of services and programs to meet the critical needs of county residents in the most efficient and effective manner;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 11, 2009 be designated "Bernalillo County Day" at the house of representatives and that Bernalillo county be appropriately recognized and honored; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the Bernalillo county commission.
