A MEMORIAL

CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL OF EUNICE, NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, Eunice, a city of approximately two thousand six hundred persons in southeastern New Mexico, was founded in 1909 by John N. Carson and named for his daughter, Eunice Carson; and

     WHEREAS, from its very beginning, Eunice has been a place with great community spirit, holding school picnics at the "84 Ranch" and square dances at the Carson store; and

     WHEREAS, in the mid-1930s, local oil-producing wells brought an influx of new settlers to Eunice and boosted the population to approximately five thousand five hundred persons; and 

     WHEREAS, Eunice has grown from a small settlement with a one-room schoolhouse to a town with numerous places to dine and drink, a health clinic, an inn and a motel, a lumber yard, a tax office, an award-winning public library, a youth center, a senior citizens center, a bank, a grocery store, a discount store, insurance shops and many other businesses; and

     WHEREAS, Eunice enjoys a moderate four-season climate and offers various outdoor recreational opportunities at the city's parks, lake and golf course; and

     WHEREAS, Eunice is a friendly, hospitable community that still adheres to its pioneering spirit;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it join with Eunice residents to celebrate its one hundred years as a community; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state take pride in the ongoing growth, development and contributions of this southeastern city; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor, to each of the state's southern New Mexico elected officials, to the mayor of Eunice and to each of the public schools in Eunice.
