49th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - first session, 2009

INTRODUCED BY

Thomas A. Anderson

A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO INSTRUCT THE HOUSE CHIEF CLERK TO POST RESULTS OF HOUSE ROLL-CALL VOTES ON THE LEGISLATIVE WEB SITE.

     WHEREAS, elected officials are well aware that the public has placed a priority on transparency and accountability in government; and

     WHEREAS, knowing how a legislator voted is critical to being able to evaluate the legislator and hold the legislator accountable; and

     WHEREAS, even so, the only way that the public, at present, can find out the results of floor votes by a roll call is to wait until after the session when the journal becomes available; and

     WHEREAS, the senate already posts the results of its roll-call votes immediately on the legislative web site; and

     WHEREAS, there is no technical impediment to the house of representatives doing the same thing by making votes instantly available when they are made on the floor subject to a call of the roll;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council be requested to instruct the house chief clerk to post results of house roll-call votes on the legislative web site; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council and to the house chief clerk.
