A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS DEPARTMENT TO COLLABORATE WITH THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TO IDENTIFY, PROJECT AND TRACK THE FUTURE WORK FORCE NEEDS OF NEW MEXICO BUSINESSES AND GOVERNMENT.

 

     WHEREAS, part of the vision of the workforce solutions department is to meet the current and emerging needs of New Mexico businesses; and

     WHEREAS, part of the stated mission of the workforce solutions department is to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of New Mexico businesses by improving the quality and availability of the New Mexico work force; and

     WHEREAS, the mission of the economic development department is to enhance the lifestyle of all New Mexicans; and

     WHEREAS, in order to accomplish these missions, a reliable assessment of future employment needs will be required; and

     WHEREAS, while many statistics and much data are collected to reflect the current economic condition of New Mexico and the existing nature of jobs and occupations, there is little data available to forecast the future occupational needs of businesses and government; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico would benefit from long-range projections of the occupations that will be needed to meet the future needs of the state; and

     WHEREAS, long-range projections of future needs not only will benefit those who may be seeking employment, but will foster economic development and be of general benefit to the residents of the state;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the workforce solutions department be requested to collaborate with the economic development department to identify, project and track the future work force needs of New Mexico businesses and government; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the workforce solutions department be requested to specifically track the number and type of jobs projected to be needed in New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the projections encompass a period of not less than five years into the future; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of workforce solutions and the secretary of economic development.
