AN ACT

RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; DELAYING THE APPLICABILITY OF CHANGES TO THE SCHOOL YEAR AND LENGTH OF THE SCHOOL DAY; PROVIDING FOR A CONTINUING STUDY.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. Laws 2009, Chapter 276, Section 3 is amended to read:

     "Section 3. APPLICABILITY.--The provisions of this act apply to the [2011-2012] 2012-2013 and subsequent school years."

     SECTION 2. TEMPORARY PROVISION--PROVIDING FOR AN ADDITIONAL STUDY.--The public education department, in cooperation with the legislative education study committee, the legislative finance committee and other interested stakeholders appointed by the department, shall continue to study issues related to school calendars and the length of the school day pursuant to Senate Joint Memorial 12 passed by the second session of the forty-ninth legislature. The continuation of the study shall focus on the effect of scheduling practices on learning time and achievement of students. The department shall report its findings and recommendations to the legislature and the governor no later than December 15, 2010.
