A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF CONSTRUCTING PEDESTRIAN OVERPASSES ON OR NEAR THE SANTA FE INDIAN SCHOOL CAMPUS ON CERRILLOS ROAD AND THE NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF CAMPUS ON CERRILLOS ROAD AND ST. FRANCIS DRIVE.

 

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe Indian school, which is located on Cerrillos road, is a sovereign educational institution with more than seven hundred students and staff members; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico school for the deaf, which is located on the corner of Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive, is a state educational institution with more than three hundred fifteen students and staff members; and

     WHEREAS, hundreds of students and staff members of Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf, as well as thousands of Santa Fe residents, use Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive on a daily basis; and

     WHEREAS, currently, there are no safety crosswalks or structures in place on Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive and many residents have been hurt or killed while using those roads; and

     WHEREAS, the safety of the individuals who use Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive is a pressing concern for the Santa Fe Indian school, the New Mexico school for the deaf and the city of Santa Fe;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be requested to work with the Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf to address the safety issues that are facing the students and staff members of the Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf, as well as other pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists accessing St. Francis drive and Cerrillos road near the two campuses; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the department of transportation be requested to make findings on the potential solutions to the safety issues associated with Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive in the area near the two schools, including the feasibility of constructing pedestrian overpasses, and report its findings to the appropriate legislative interim committee by November 1, 2011; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation, the superintendent of the Santa Fe Indian school and the board of regents of the New Mexico school for the deaf.
