A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT THE NEW MEXICO JUDICIAL STANDARDS COMMISSION MAKE A PRESENTATION EVERY YEAR TO THE LEGISLATIVE INTERIM COURTS, CORRECTIONS AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE.

 

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico judicial standards commission is responsible for handling all complaints of misconduct by members of the New Mexico judiciary; and

     WHEREAS, in 2010, the New Mexico judicial standards commission was the fourth busiest judicial disciplinary agency in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, the number and severity of complaints to the New Mexico judicial standards commission are at historically high levels; and

     WHEREAS, the legislature has a responsibility to allocate resources to the judiciary; and

     WHEREAS, the legislative interim courts, corrections and justice committee has not had a presentation from the New Mexico judicial standards commission staff in over five years;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico judicial standards committee be requested to make a presentation every year on the status of judicial discipline in the state to the legislative interim courts, corrections and justice committee; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico judicial standards commission.
