A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.

 

     WHEREAS, November is officially lung cancer awareness month; and

     WHEREAS, during November, people around the world come together in support of the lung cancer community; and

     WHEREAS, about one hundred fifty-eight thousand people die each year from lung cancer; and

     WHEREAS, an estimated two hundred twenty-one thousand people were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011; and

     WHEREAS, lung cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, evidence has shown that certain screening can reduce the number of people dying of lung cancer by tens of thousands each year; and

     WHEREAS, the number of lung cancer clinical trials has nearly doubled in recent years; and

     WHEREAS, more than fifty major medical institutions, national public health organizations, veterans service organizations and social justice advocacy groups have joined together in public support of lung cancer mortality reduction; and

     WHEREAS, the state of New Mexico understands the value of bringing awareness to this important issue;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that November 2013 be recognized as lung cancer awareness month.
