A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE SERIOUSNESS OF HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN; CELEBRATING THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION'S SUCCESS IN SAVING LIVES; DECLARING FEBRUARY 5, 2013 AS "NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY" IN THE SENATE.

     WHEREAS, the American heart association's "Go Red For Women" movement has had an impact on the health of women for ten years, saving more than six hundred twenty thousand lives and reducing by three hundred thirty the number of women who die from heart disease each day; and

     WHEREAS, heart disease kills more women than any other cause, yet only one of every five American women believes that heart disease is the greatest threat to her health; and

     WHEREAS, each year, cardiovascular diseases cause one in every three deaths of women at a rate of approximately one death per minute; and

     WHEREAS, an estimated forty-three million women in the United States are affected by cardiovascular diseases; and

     WHEREAS, ninety percent of women exhibit one or more of the characteristics that are associated with the development of heart disease; and

     WHEREAS, only twenty-four percent of participants in all heart-related studies are women; and

     WHEREAS, since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease; and

     WHEREAS, the gap between the heart disease survival rate of men and the heart disease survival rate of women continues to widen; and

     WHEREAS, a woman is less likely to call for emergency help when she experiences the symptoms of a heart attack than when she observes someone else experiencing those symptoms; and

     WHEREAS, in celebration of the tenth "National Wear Red Day" in February, the American heart association is asking that all women in America help to raise awareness of heart disease by wearing red;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 5, 2013 be declared "National Wear Red Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that people be requested to wear red on that day; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the American heart association of New Mexico.
