A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE MEXICAN AMERICAN LAW STUDENT ASSOCIATION FOR FORTY-THREE YEARS OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, the Mexican American law student association, known as MALSA, was founded in 1970 at the university of New Mexico school of law to encourage, promote and further the education of Latino law students, and MALSA members have worked tirelessly since then in this endeavor; and

     WHEREAS, MALSA members have dedicated themselves to service to the people of New Mexico, striving in all areas of the legal community as justices, judges, attorneys, elected officials and law students; and

     WHEREAS, MALSA founded el central legal, a legal services clinic to provide legal services to indigent members of the community, which later became the university of New Mexico school of law's nationally ranked clinical law program; and

     WHEREAS, in 1996, MALSA founded the national Latina/o law student association, the leading organization of its kind in the nation today; and

     WHEREAS, MALSA has advanced equal access to education for minorities in New Mexico and the nation; and

     WHEREAS, MALSA will host the 2013 national Latina/o law student association conference from October 24 to October 26, 2013 at the state capitol in Santa Fe, New Mexico;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that MALSA be recognized for its forty-three years of dedicated and exemplary service to the people of the great state of New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the Mexican American law student association, to the chief justice of the New Mexico supreme court, to the governor and to the dean of the university of New Mexico school of law.
