A MEMORIAL

CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF NEW MEXICO COMMUNITY COLLEGE ALL-STATE ACADEMIC TEAM MEMBERS AND DECLARING JANUARY 29, 2014 "COMMUNITY COLLEGE COMPLETION DAY" IN THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, New Mexico community colleges join with phi theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges, in support of college completion efforts and to honor a group of the best and brightest students as members of the "New Mexico all-state academic team"; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico community colleges provide a broad array of post-secondary educational services in communities throughout the state, including two-year degree programs and certificates, leading to well-paid employment in many sectors of the state's economy; and

     WHEREAS, completing an associate's degree or certificate from a New Mexico community college creates better citizens; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico community colleges are committed to making positive changes in the interest of student success and college completion; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico community colleges are committed to the creation of partnerships with high school and university officials to foster policies that promote smooth transitions from one educational institution to another; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico community colleges are committed to student access and to student success, and try to provide all students with the essential resources and support systems that lead to establishing a culture of college completion; and

     WHEREAS, community colleges, while increasing success rates for all students, are working with particular focus toward the elimination of roadblocks that separate student groups on the basis of race, ethnicity and family income; and

     WHEREAS, the outstanding academic success of the forty members of the 2014 New Mexico all-state academic team, most of whom are members of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, is being recognized during ceremonies at the state capitol on January 29, 2014 at which time the students will be honored for their academic achievements, as well as for scholarship offers from New Mexico's public universities to complete their baccalaureate degrees;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that in recognition of the significant contribution of New Mexico community colleges in the preparation of a skilled work force for the state's economy, and of the academic success of the members of the New Mexico all-state academic team, January 29, 2014 be declared "Community College Completion Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the 2014 New Mexico all-state academic team and the twenty phi theta kappa chapters in the New Mexico region.
