A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING ASSISTANCE FOR THE PLANNING, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND EQUIPPING OF THE KINTEEL RESIDENTIAL CAMPUS IN AZTEC.

 

     WHEREAS, the Kinteel residential campus in Aztec was formerly known as Aztec high school dormitory; and

     WHEREAS, construction of the dormitory was completed in the spring of 1964, and it is about to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary; and

     WHEREAS, the facility has a long and proud history of housing children, and at one point one hundred twenty-eight students resided there; and

     WHEREAS, the building is now a health and safety hazard for students and staff alike; and

     WHEREAS, with five million dollars ($5,000,000), a new one-hundred-twelve-bed residential dormitory could be built to provide safe and appropriate student housing;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE

STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the senate support the dormitory project in Aztec; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the New Mexico congressional delegation be requested to aid in the effort to financially support the planning, design, construction and equipping of the Kinteel residential campus in Aztec; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico congressional delegation, the United States department of the interior bureau of Indian education, Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly, the Navajo Nation department of Dine' education, the governor of New Mexico, the secretary of public education, the San Juan county board of county commissioners and the New Mexico legislative council.
