AN ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION; REQUIRING SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND INDIVIDUAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO ESTABLISH STANDARDS IMPLEMENTATION LEADERSHIP TEAMS TO MANAGE IMPLEMENTATION OF STATE-ADOPTED COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS STANDARDS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. A new section of the Assessment and Accountability Act is enacted to read:

     "[NEW MATERIAL] STANDARDS IMPLEMENTATION LEADERSHIP TEAMS--ESTABLISHMENT--IMPLEMENTATION OF STANDARDS.--

          A. As used in this section, "school district" includes a locally chartered or state-chartered charter school.

          B. Each school district and each individual public school within a school district shall establish a "standards implementation leadership team", which shall consist of school administrators and teachers.

          C. The standards implementation leadership team shall provide leadership to manage the process for implementation of state-adopted college and career readiness standards, including the following:

                (1) developing methodologies to move the school staff from awareness to implementation of the state-adopted standards and to ensure that staff members understand them;

                (2) providing for a way in which teachers are allowed to share their perspectives and pedagogical strategies with each other as they learn about and implement the state-adopted standards;

                (3) gathering both qualitative and quantitative data about the progress of implementation, questions that arise and the types of support needed by teachers; and

                (4) ensuring that the implementation of the state-adopted standards takes into consideration the needs of the staff and student population of the school."

     SECTION 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2015.
