FOR THE COURTS, CORRECTIONS AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE

 

AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY FOR ANALYZING DNA EVIDENCE KITS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. APPROPRIATION.--Two million three hundred thousand dollars ($2,300,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the department of public safety for expenditure in fiscal years 2017 through 2019 to hire necessary staff and purchase the materials or equipment necessary to clear the existing backlog of unprocessed DNA evidence kits to be processed by the department. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2019 shall revert to the general fund.
