INTRODUCED BY

Nate Gentry and Paul A. Pacheco

A MEMORIAL

HONORING AND RECOGNIZING THE HEROISM AND SACRIFICES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.

     WHEREAS, every year, many dedicated, service-oriented New Mexicans choose to enter law enforcement despite the incredible dangers and uncertainties that come with the job; and

     WHEREAS, every day, law enforcement officers unselfishly risk their lives to ensure protection of the rights, privileges, property and safety of the people of New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, sworn to preserve peace, maintain order and prevent and detect crime, law enforcement officers never know what challenges and turn of events their day will bring, much less whether they will end their day safe at home with their loved ones; and

     WHEREAS, hundreds of police departments and sheriffs' offices around the country have lost personnel in the line of duty; and

     WHEREAS, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as national "Peace Officers Memorial Day" in honor and remembrance of those who have lost their lives or who have become disabled in the performance of duty; and

     WHEREAS, in 2015, Albuquerque police department Officer Daniel Scott Webster and Rio Rancho police department Officer Gregg "Nigel" Benner both lost their lives in the line of duty, and Albuquerque police department Officer Lou Golson was severely wounded in the line of duty; and

     WHEREAS, without the courageous men and women serving in law enforcement agencies, the great state of New Mexico would be a less safe and secure place for all;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that law enforcement officers be honored and recognized for the daily heroism and sacrifices made to ensure the peace and safety of New Mexicans in all of the state's communities; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the family of Officer Daniel Scott Webster, the family of Officer Gregg "Nigel" Benner, Officer Lou Golson, the Albuquerque police department, the Rio Rancho police department, the New Mexico sheriffs' and police association and the secretary of public safety.
