A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 9, 2016 "COACH BOB SWEENEY DAY" IN THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, Robert Miles Sweeney was born on May 5, 1927 in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Sweeney attended elementary, middle and high school in Santa Fe, lettering in four sports and winning a state championship in football in 1943 as a Santa Fe high school demon; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Sweeney enlisted in the United States navy and served a short tour of duty, after which he attended the university of Notre Dame on a football scholarship and later received his bachelor of arts degree in physical education from the university of Colorado in Boulder on a basketball scholarship; and

     WHEREAS, in 1949, Coach Sweeney began his long coaching career at St. Michael's college, later named the college of Santa Fe; and

     WHEREAS, in 1953, Coach Sweeney married the former Lena Cisneros of Santa Fe; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Sweeney was then drafted into the United States army and served for two years before returning to St. Michael's college; and

     WHEREAS, in 1957, Coach Sweeney became the head basketball coach at the university of New Mexico and earned a master's degree in physical education at the university; and

     WHEREAS, in 1962, Coach Sweeney returned to the college of Santa Fe as head basketball coach, athletic director and professor of physical education; and

     WHEREAS, in 1964, Coach Sweeney began eighteen years of service on the Santa Fe school board, twelve of which he served as board president; and

     WHEREAS, in 1992, after thirty-seven years of coaching and teaching, Coach Sweeney retired from the college of Santa Fe; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Sweeney lives in Santa Fe with Lena, his wife of sixty-three years; his children, Patty, Marty, David and Arlene; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandson on the way;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 9, 2016 be declared "Coach Bob Sweeney Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Coach Bob Sweeney be recognized for his service to his country, his service to the public schools of Santa Fe and his many significant contributions to public education and athletics in New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Coach Bob Sweeney.
